For Walt, the single biggest secret of his success, and the success of all
of his animated characters, from Mickey Mouse onward, was the creation
of personality. Mickey himself was, right from the beginning, really an extension of
Walt's own personality...and that also made him a sort of Everyman...Mickey's triumphs
and troubles were everyone's. People identified. And later they could also identify with
Donald Duck's temper; with Goofy's frustrations; Dopey's simple enthusiasm; Cinderella's
beautiful gentleness; Winnie the Pooh's whimsical – and honey-centered – view of life.
Personality is also the secret of the Walt Disney Classics Collection. These fine animation
art sculptures are created using the same principles that Disney animators have used since
the beginning...that it's the character inside the sculpture that makes the difference.
As we celebrate Walt's 100th birthday this year, it is more important than ever to remember
not only that "it was all started by a Mouse," but that those simple principles, of character
and personality, are still fundamental to everything we do. I hope that each sculpture will
